There will always be a need for abortion care. Every year, across the world, nearly one in three pregnancies end in abortion. However, millions of people are currently unable to access the services they need to end their pregnancy safely.
Almost half of all abortions worldwide are unsafe: an estimated 35 million each year. As a result, seven million women will face complications and 22,800 will die. The Guttmacher Institute estimate that 8-11% of maternal deaths globally can be attributed to unsafe abortion.
We believe in a world where no one is forced to risk their health or their life for the right to determine their own future. That’s why we are committed to ending unsafe abortion for good. By providing safe abortion services when and where they’re needed, and where the legal context allows, we support women to make the reproductive choices that are best for them and help to reduce the number of women that are forced to seek unsafe services.
Medical abortion (also known as the abortion pill or medication abortion) involves taking medication to end a pregnancy.
It's a safe, non-invasive alternative to surgical abortion, which we can offer to women both inside and outside of a healthcare facility. This means, depending on the country, women can have more control over when and where their treatment takes place.
Expanding access to medical abortion continues to be one of the most important tools in combating unsafe abortion.

All of our programmes provide post-abortion care - life-saving care for women who experience complications from an incomplete miscarriage or unsafe abortion. Our teams are trained to assess and treat injuries caused, often providing urgent life-saving care.
As emergency medical treatment, post-abortion care can always be legally provided, and is particularly important in countries where legal restrictions on abortion care mean there are high rates of unsafe abortion.
